The gap between a good charging accessory and a bad one is mostly invisible in a photograph, which is exactly why the market is full of product that should never have reached a shelf. These are the checks we run before an item enters our catalog, and any buyer can run most of them.
Ask for the certification, not the claim
A logo printed on a box means nothing on its own. Ask for the actual test report with the file number and the testing laboratory named, then confirm the report covers the model you are buying rather than a similar one from the same factory.
For power adapters that means UL or ETL testing. For anything with a radio it means an FCC declaration. For anything with a lithium cell it means a UN38.3 transport test summary and a safety data sheet. A supplier who cannot produce these within a day or two probably does not have them.
Weigh the adapter
A wall adapter that feels suspiciously light usually is. Proper isolation, filtering and thermal management require real components with real mass. An adapter that weighs a fraction of a comparable certified unit has had those components removed, and what was removed is the part that keeps the mains supply away from the customer.
This one check catches a surprising share of dangerous product without any equipment at all.
Inspect the connector and the strain relief
Cables fail at the connector far more often than anywhere along the run. Look for a molded strain relief that flexes gradually rather than a hard collar that concentrates every bend into one point. Check that the connector shell is crimped and seated rather than glued.
On USB C connectors specifically, check that the tongue is centered and firm. A loose tongue means an early failure and a return you will pay for.
Question the capacity claim
Overstated capacity is endemic in power banks and memory. A 20000mAh power bank that weighs noticeably less than comparable units is not holding the cells it claims. A memory card at an unusually attractive price should be tested for true capacity and sustained write speed before a single unit is sold.
We test both as a matter of routine. If a supplier reacts to the request with vagueness rather than data, that reaction is the answer.
The buyer checklist
Run this before committing to a new item from any supplier.
- Test report exists, names the laboratory and covers this exact model
- Adapter weight is consistent with comparable certified units
- Cable strain relief is molded and gradual, connector shell is crimped
- Power bank capacity verified under load rather than accepted from the label
- Memory capacity and sustained write speed verified on a sample
- Supplier can name the factory and produce its business license
- Warranty terms are written down rather than described verbally

Certification paperwork, physical weight, connector construction and verified capacity catch nearly every problem before it reaches your shelf. A supplier who answers these questions with documents is worth more than one who answers with a lower price.
